Live horse racing is back at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino near Edmonton. The track opened its 2026 season on Saturday, May 2, with eight live races, CTV News Edmonton reported.

First post on opening day was set for 3:45 p.m., according to the event listing from Discover Leduc. Admission and parking were free, and the day was billed as a family-friendly outing open to all ages.

Horse Racing Alberta's stewards report for the day recorded sunny skies, a temperature of 21 C and a fast track. The eight-race card drew a handle of $491,369. Stewards reviewed a foul claim in the second race but left the order of finish unchanged, and fined jockey Keihton Natera $100 for failing to keep a straight course.

The spring and summer meet features thoroughbred and quarter horse racing. Spectators can watch from the outdoor apron, and the Finish Line Restaurant and concession stands operate on race days.

Western Canada's only one-mile track

Century Mile, at 4711 Airport Perimeter Road in Nisku, bills itself as Western Canada's only Class A one-mile racetrack. The facility sits next to Edmonton International Airport and combines a casino with the racing oval.

The track opened in 2019. Century Casinos owns the operation outright, while VICI Properties owns the land and buildings and leases them to the company. Century Casinos also runs Century Downs north of Calgary, along with casinos in Edmonton and St. Albert.

Century Mile operates under a racing entertainment centre licence. In 2021 it applied with Century Downs to convert to a full casino licence and add 10 table games. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission refused, and the operators took the decision to court, where a judge dismissed their challenge in December 2025.

Race days at Century Mile typically feature several races over a span of hours. Full schedules and post times are published by the track and by Horse Racing Alberta.
